Online psychiatry or telepsychiatry is the process of seeing a psychiatrist via a HIPPA compliant video platform. The advantages of online psychiatry include more privacy and confidentiality than office psychiatry visits, less time travelling to see a psychiatrist, being able to see a psychiatrist who does not live in your neighbourhood, being able to see a psychiatrist with a specific subspeciality, for an example a psychiatrist who may specialise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for PTSD. Telepsychiatry is still fairly new, and requires equipment such as a computer or laptop, and high speed internet for videoconferencing. Many online psychiatry softwares and cloud based and do not require installation or download, more like a secure version of skype. The widespread use of Electronic health records, e-prescribing and e-labwork, as well teh increased availability of 4G internet makes the use of telepsychiatry much more convenient for both patients and providers.
